Getting Started with iPod Touch

So the year is about to begin and we just found out at the end of the last school year that our iPod Touch Pilot Program is a go for this year. We have budgeted for approximately 21-22 iPod Touches to be used in one Grade 3 classroom! We are very excited to begin this program.

Luckily, myself and Jake Cross (Grade 3 Classroom Teacher who will be using them) met at the end of last year to do some planning. Here is what we came up with for our introductory lessons:

-Basic skills (lessons, practice, etc)

-Starting Apps (dropbox, voice recorder, Safari, email, photo, music, google docs, podcasts)

-Agreements/Rules for students: Keep very structured initially, possibly have a morning routine (DOL)

-Care/upkeep

-ebooks, audiobooks for Language Arts. Nice way to differentiate and integrate into reading

-Letter to parents-surveys for comparing attitudes (pre/post)

-Blog-A professional blog will be used to communicate learning throughout the year

iPod Touch 4 Coming Out With Camera

Yes as I predicted few months ago, Apple is releasing new iPod Touch Gen 4 with Camera. Basically you can take all iPhone 4 functions minus the GPS and Phone feature and that will be your new iPod Touch 4.

DigiTimes Report:

'The new iPod touch will feature a 3-megapixel camera, capable of both photo and video recording, and will adopt Apple's latest A4 processor, which is also used in the iPhone 4.''

I guess it's about time iPod Touch get's updated, right?

How to Jailbreak Your iPod Touch 2G Using PwnageTool (Mac) [4.0]

These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPod Touch 2G on iOS 4.0 using PwnageTool for Mac.

● If you have an iPod touch 2G (non-MC model) that is jailbroken (but not with Spirit) then you can restore using recovery mode.

● As an alternative to PwnageTool, you can use redsn0w on non-MC iPod Touch 2G.

Step One
Make a folder called "Pwnage" on the desktop. In it, you will need a couple of things. PwnageTool 4.0, found here or here

You will also need the 4.0 iPod Touch firmware.
4.0.0 (2G): iPod2,1_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw

When downloading the IPSW file, it is best to download it with Firefox since Safari often auto extracts it!


Step Two
Double click to mount PwnageTool then drag the PwnageTool icon into the Pwnage folder.


Then from the Pwnage folder double click to launch the PwnageTool application.


Click Ok if presented with a warning.


Step Three
Click to select Expert Mode from the top menu bar


Step Four
Click to select your iPod. A check-mark will appear over the image of the phone.


Step Five
Click the blue arrow button to continue. You will be brought to the "Browse for IPSW" page. On my laptop, it automatically found the IPSW. If PwnageTool doesn't automatically find the ipsw file you can click Browse for IPSW....


Click to select the found IPSW file, a checkmark will appear next to it. Then click the blue arrow button to continue.


Step Six
You will then be brought to a menu with several choices. Click to select General then click the blue arrow button.


The General settings allows you to decide the partition size. Here you can also choose to enable iOS 4 features such as Multitasking, Wallpapers, and Battery Percentage. If you choose to do this please be aware that the performance of your device could suffer.


The Cydia settings menu allows you to create custom packages so you do not have to manually install the necessary them later.


Click to select the Download packages tab. Then click the Refresh button to display all the available packages. Double clicking the package you want will download it and make it available in the Select Packages tab.


Checkmark the ones you want then Click the blue arrow button.


The Custom Packages Settings menu displays listed package settings for your custom IPSW. For know leave these settings as is. Click the blue arrow button to continue.


The Custom Logos Settings menu allows you to add your own images as boot logos. Click the Browse button to select your Boot logo and Recovery logo.


Remember the rules for them: RGB or Grayscale format with Alpha channel and dimensions below 320x480...

Click the blue arrow button to continue.


Step Seven
You are now ready to begin the pwnage process! Click the Build button to select it then click the Blue arrow button to begin.


Step Eight
You will be asked to save your custom .ipsw file. Save it to your Pwnage folder you created on your Desktop.


Your IPSW is now being built. Please allow up to 10 minutes.


You will be asked to enter your administrator password. Do this then click the OK button.


Step Nine
Once your ipsw has been built you will be asked to place your iPod into recovery mode. Click OK to close the popup message telling you this, then connect your iPod to the computer and follow these instructions on how to put your iPod into recovery mode.


Step Ten
Once In iTunes, hold the Alt/Option key and click Restore.


Step Eleven
Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop using the dialog window that appears. Select the custom IPSW that was created and click the Open button.


Step Twelve
iTunes will now restore the firmware on your iPod. This can also take up to 10 minutes. Once done you will be rebooted into jailbroken iPod OS 4.0!

Manually Jailbreak iOS 4 on iPod Touch 3G & iPod Touch 2G(MC Model)

Sn0wbreeze 1.7 for 4.0 has been released. Just like PwnageTool 4.0/ 4.0.1 for Macs, you can now create custom pwned / jailbroken ipsw files on Windows too which can now jailbreak all iOS devices (except iPhone 4) on iOS 4, including iPhone 3GS (new bootrom),iPod Touch 2G (MC models) and iPod touch 3G. But there is a catch to it! You will need to have their SHSH blobs saved for iOS 3.1.2 in order to successfully jailbreak these devices on iOS 4. Also the jailbreak for iPhone 3GS (new bootrom), iPod touch 2G (MC models) and iPod touch 3G on iOS 4 will be tethered, which means whenever you turn off your phone, you will need to re-connect it to a computer to be able to turn it back on.

Once you have created a custom firmware file, you can simply restore to it via iTunes 9.2. If there are any changes, we will redo the guide and post it again here.

If you don’t have your 3.1.2 (NOT 3.1.3) SHSH blobs (ECID SHSH) files saved, you will have to then wait for the next version of Spirit which is likely to be released as soon as Apple releases the next firmware update i.e. iOS 4.0.1/ 4.1 and it will support all iOS devices including iPhone 4.

STEP C: iBooty Prep.
Most of you know of the utility "iBooty" that I made for Aki_nG.
It will work as long as you place all of the correct files there.
I : Download iBooty GUI here — iBooty V1.5 (http://www.mediafire.com/?mmnjti0midn) and Extract it.

II : Extract your Custom IPSW created by sn0wbreeze with 7-Zip or another un-archiver.

III : Grab the kernelcache and bring it into the same folder as ibooty.
Also grab iBEC from the folder "Firmware\dfu".
Aswell as DeviceTree from the folder "Firmware\all_flash\all_flash.n88ap.production\DeviceTree.n88ap".

IV :
* Rename your Kernel 4.0-Custom to "kernel.40"
* Rename your iBEC 4.0-Custom to "ibec.40"
* Rename your DeviceTree 4.0-Custom to "devtree.40"
***MAKE SURE YOU REMOVE THE .img3/.dfu/etc extensions!***

***WHEN DONE, YOUR DEVICE WILL GO INTO RECOVERY MODE. IT WONT BOOT.***

I : Just Re-Run iBooty and select "Boot It". If all goes well it will boot!

Next Gen iPod Touch (4G) to feature 5MP camera and a front facing camera with Facetime

Today more reports (rumors) cropped up about the rumored next generation (4G) iPod Touch featuring a Camera. If you recall in May there were a few pictures reportedly of the next generation iPod Touch with the camera. Now we have 2 reports that confirm the existence of the camera in the next version of the iPod Touch to be unveiled in September. Read more...

The 1st report is a picture of a presentation slide from John Lewis, one of Britain's biggest retailers. In the slide it is mentioned that the new iPod Touch will feature a 5 megapixel camera that can capture HD video (presumably at 720p just like iPhone 4). Also the more exciting news is that the the new iPod Touch will feature Apple's new FaceTime video chat over Wi-Fi. What this means is the iPod Touch will have a front-facing camera too.

The 2nd report is from 9to5mac.com which has published 2 pictures of LCD panels for the iPod Touch that has a hole for the front facing camera.
