The Apple Ipod touch TV video

I bought one of these ipod touch video wires from ebay and hooked it up to my TV. It didn't work. Apparently, after reading the forums, there is software built in to the apple ipod that updated in the 2nd generation that recognizes un-authentic apple hardware. Prior to that, this would have worked on the 1st generation.This is a disappointment because all of the original apple equipment is overpriced at the retail level. Many other gadgets I have allow me to use any type of equipment from other manufacturers.
