XtremeMac acquired by Imation

Imation Corp., which develops, manufactures, and sells various electronic iPod and iPhone accessories under the Memorex brand, today announced its acquisition of Xtreme Accessories (XtremeMac) for a purchase price of $9 million.

XtremeMac was one of the earliest developers of iPod accessories, but appeared to have struggled in recent months with iPhone compatibility, substantial release delays, and uncertainty as to whether prior products would come back into stock.

Commenting on the transaction, Frank Russomanno, Imation’s President and Chief Executive Officer said: “With the acquisition of XtremeMac, Imation has added a brand recognized and respected by Apple enthusiasts and one that enhances our portfolio of products serving the growing market for consumer electronics related accessories.”

Gary Bart, founder and President of XtremeMac, will join Imation as Executive Director, guiding the company’s Apple accessory design efforts. It is unclear how the acquisition will impact currently delayed XtremeMac products, such as the Luna X2 clock radio, and whether the company’s name will continue to appear on future products.

Shade Cases For iPod Touch

Shades iPod touch case is a Polyurethane soft plastic layer that encloses the entire iPod touch, except for its headphone port, and Dock Connector. The Sleep/Wake button covered, but the Shade exposes its full bottom save for its corners.

“It’s Not a Case. It’s Not a Skin. It’s Shades for iPod Touch” is the slogan of this product. And there a reason behind the slogan: it is only 0.4mm thick.. so it is thinner than any iPod touch case that you’ll ever find. To be more accurate, it is not exactly a case, but are half way between cases and film.

The Polyurethane material is 100% durable, providing your iPod touch with full protection, including crystal-clear screen protection, while providing full access to all of the iPod's ports, allowing you to plug in just about anything. It will keep your iPod touch safe from keys and other surfaces that might scratch the back. In addition, it is smooth but isn’t particularly slippery so it won’t fall out of your fingers.

There are 12 Stylish Vibrant Colors available for the Shade cases. You may view them here. The price for this product is currently USD 16.95.

    Barack Obama reveals iPod’s contents

In an interview with Rolling Stone to be published later this week, presumptive Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama has revealed some of the contents of his personal iPod. “I have pretty eclectic tastes,” said Obama, who said he had music from a wide range of artists on his iPod, from Miles Davis and John Coltrane to Jay-Z and Ludacris.

Obama, who grew up in the 1970’s, said he listened to the Rolling Stones (his favorite Stones track is the seminal “Gimme Shelter"), Elton John, and Earth Wind and Fire, adding that Stevie Wonder was his “musical hero” of the period.

Interestingly, Obama also had a wide selection of tracks from Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ favorite Bob Dylan, including the entire Blood on the Tracks album. “Actually, one of my favorites during the political season is ‘Maggie’s Farm,’ “ Obama said. “It speaks to me as I listen to some of the political rhetoric.”

In the song, Dylan sings about trying be himself, “but everybody wants you to be just like them.” Many musicians appearing on Obama’s iPod have lent him their support during his campaign, including Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. “I’ve got to say, having both Dylan and Bruce Springsteen say kind words about you is pretty remarkable,” Obama said. “Those guys are icons.”

Obama also admits to having concerns over the the content of some rap music to which his daughters might be exposed. “I am troubled sometimes by the misogyny and materialism of a lot of rap lyrics,” he said, “but I think the genius of the art form has shifted the culture and helped to desegregate music.”

He went on to call hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons and rappers Jay-Z and Ludacris “great talents and great businessmen,” adding that “it would be nice if I could have my daughters listen to their music without me worrying that they were getting bad images of themselves.”

Apple makes changes to iPod games, rental listings

In preparation for the rollout of the App Store and further expansion of its movie rental services, Apple has made a series of subtle changes to its iTunes Store listings for both iPod Games and movie rentals.

Today, Apple officially changed the heading on its iPod Games pages from “iPod Games” to “iPod classic and nano Games,” differentiating the current listings from possible future listings for iPod touch- and iPhone-compatible games.

In addition, the company has begun listing the date that films will be available for rent on the purchase pages.

The second change may be to aid users who had hoped to rent a title and were confused as to why it was available for purchase but not for rent, or as a prelude to pre-orders for automatic film rental downloads to a computer.

Known as Air Jacket Set in the US, and Crystal Jacket Set in Japan, this new product from Power Support is a clear-plastic case for iPod touch which comes with two case backs, one with a stand, and one without. The stand can be rotated for 360 degrees in 90-degree increments, and folds in when not in use.

    air jacket ipod touch case

The design of Air/Crystal Jacket Set is clean and simple. Inspired by the MacBook Air, Power Support has released this iPod touch case with an extremely thin plastic shell. The rear shell is only 0.7mm thick, but it's enough to protect the iPod touch’s back, sides, and top from scratch. This is good for those who want to maintain the original sleek design of the iPod touch.

The Air/Crystal Jacket Set iPod touch case leaves the Sleep/Wake button and also the bottom uncovered. This makes it easy for you to access the iPod's button, dock-connector port and headphone jack. It also comes with a clear film that protect the iPod touch screen, and a rubber plug for the dock.

The Air/Crystal Jacket Set From Power Support cost USD 29.95. It's a good choice for those who like simplistic design.

Wallpapper - decorate your IPod Touch Share your desktop picture

Developer’s description of app: See what everyone has as their wallpaper.

Dude this app is SWEET!! When you first open the app is gives you a little warning that your wallpaper is about to be shared with everyone. If you decide to continue, a copy of whatever your wallpaper is when you tap continue is put into a pool with everyone else’s. This is where is gets really cool, it then scrolls through everyone else’s wallpaper showing a new one every 5 seconds or so. But, it gets even cooler (if that is a word)…if you see a really sweet wallpaper that you want to put as your wallpaper, just tap on the image and select “use as wallpaper” and it sets it as your wallpaper! However, it does replace your current wallpaper so if your wallpaper is a picture you took that is no longer in your photos make sure you really want to replace it. There are a few things I can think of that would make this app even better…the ability to scroll though the wallpaper yourself so you don’t have to wait and the ability to save the wallpapers to your phone. Other than that, it is pretty cool to see everyone’s wallpaper! There are some really sweet ones! Here are some screenshots:

    Jiggy Runtime

    http://jiggyapp.com/

It is Framework. Some of the applications requires this.

Simply put, Jiggy is the easiest way to create applications for the iPhone (or iPod Touch). With just Jiggy and a browser, you'll be able to write an awesome iPhone application in a matter of minutes. JiggyApps run natively on the iPhone, so there is no messing around with HTML and the limitations of Mobile Safari. At the same time, you don't need a compiler or even a Mac, because JiggyApps are written in JavaScript.
    from original website.

    Tetris!

Tetris! is tetris, it tells everything. You can get it from the newATTiPhone.com source. It requires Jiggy Runtime in order to actually play it so, make sure you install that first! When you open up the game for the first time it will ask you for your name. The game requires a name because Tetris! has a high score table. On the actual game screen you will notice the buttons “pause” and “hold piece”. Tetris! uses the capabilities of the Iphone/Ipod. You use finger swipes to play the game. Swiping your finger upward will rotate the piece, swiping left will make the piece go left, swiping right will make it go right, and swiping down will make it go down…pretty self explanatory. I had no problems with the swipes, it recognized every single swipe I made. You get bonuses for clearing more than one line. If you clear four or more you get “Tetris!” which just gives you even more points. Once the blocks reache the top of the screen you lose. You have the choice to submit your score or to play again. Tetris! is exactly like the original tetris that everyone loves, but this has finger swipes and a high score table, which makes it ten times better. If you are a fan of tetris then this is an easy choice.

iPod Touch Case: Artwizz SeeJacket Crystal

The SeeJacket Crystal Case from Artwizz is an iPod touch case made from impact resistant polycarbonate. The SeeJacket Crystal Case is sleek and transparent, with two part snap-on design which makes installation extreamely easy.
    Artwizz SeeJacket Crystal Case
One of the great feature for this iPod Touch case is that it has a thin piece of plastic that covers the whole iPod touch face. The plastic is black along the sides, top and bottom, and clear where the iPod touch screen is. And the best part is, the plastic does not affect the sensitivity of the touch screen, as well as how images looked on the screen.

The polycarbonate material of the SeeJacket Crystal case is completely clear. It's also tough enough to protect both the front and backside of your iPod Touch. There are openings at the Sleep/Wake button and the dock-connector port and headphone jack for easy access.

    iPod sales grow in May

According to the latest data from market research firm NPD, iPod sales grew 11.6 percent year-over-year in May, following growth of 14.6 percent year-over-year in April.

In a note, Lehman analyst Tim Luke pointed out that this was well ahead of the 2 percent decline the firm had been expecting, and said that average iPod pricing in the quarter was down 4 percent.

“While not exactly strong, iPod demand seems to be holding up and benefiting from the lack of iPhone availability (lack of cannibalization near-term),” Luke said.

“We expect iPod demand to weaken as iPhone demand picks up, but view the current trends as positive for AAPL’s fiscal 3Q08.”

Turn Your iPod Touch into an iPhone

    From lifeHacker.

The iPhone and iPod touch are almost indistinguishable devices except for one major difference—you can make calls from your iPhone, and you can't from your iPod touch. For the privilege of making phone calls with your iPhone, you have to pay $100 more upfront to Apple for the device itself, plus a minimum of $60/month to AT&T for the next two years. Let's say you didn't need that kind of firepower from your iPod touch, but that you would like to use it make a phone call every now and then. You can, and today I'm going to show you how to make VoIP phone calls from your iPod touch or iPhone using a freeware application called SIP-VoIP.
    What You'll Need

1 .) A jailbroken iPod touch or iPhone. If you haven't already jailbroken your device, don't worry—it'll just take 45 seconds.

2.) iPhone headphones with mics don't work with the iPod touch, so if you're using an iPod touch you'll need a Touchmod mic. The Touchmod mics come in a variety of flavors, from the simple dongle that plugs into the syncing port to the headphone-and-mic combo that works much like the iPhone headphones. The hardware will set you back somewhere between $50 and $60.

3.) The freeware SIP-VoIP application. Read on for details for installing SIP-VoIP below.

UPDATE: It looks like another VoIP app for the iPhone has emerged called Fring. Fring promises to work with both Skype and SIP accounts, but like SIP-VoIP it's still young and not entirely perfect. I haven't tried it yet, but it might be a viable alternative to SIP-VoIP, and can be installed just as easily.
    Install SIP-VoIP
Assuming you've got the hardware you need and you've prepared your device, now it's time to install the VoIP application. If you don't yet have a mic, you can test that SIP-VoIP is successfully making calls before you purchase it.

I'm going to cover two different ways of installing SIP-VoIP. The first and easiest method is with Installer.app, the program that is automatically installed when you jailbreak your iPod. The second method is more difficult, but it's good to have around in case you run into errors (which I did).

    Method 1 - Install SIP-VoIP with Installer.app:

First, since SIP-VoIP isn't found in Installer.app by default, you need to add the Touchmods repository to Installer. To do so, launch Installer and head to the Sources tab. Now tap Edit -> Add, and type http://touchmods.net/rep.xml into the Add Source dialog. Hit OK, and Installer will refresh your sources, this time including your new Touchmods repository.

Now go to the Install tab and find the entry labeled Touchmods. Inside you'll see an app called Touchmods SIP-VoIP. Go ahead and install SIP-VoIP by tapping the entry, tapping the install button, and then verifying that you want to install this application from an "untrusted" source.

This is by far the easiest method for installing SIP-VoIP, but I had trouble with the latest version of SIP-VoIP (version 1.2) on my iPod touch, so I had to install a previous version (1.1). Since you can only install the latest with Installer, I'll also demonstrate how to install older versions of SIP-VoIP. I'd recommend trying it the easy way first, then moving to the following method if you have trouble. If you're taking the easy route the first time around, skip to the Set Up an SIP Account section below.

    Method 2 - Install SIP-VoIP over SSH:

To install previous versions of SIP-VoIP, you'll need to first install OpenSSH through Installer.app (you can find it under Install -> System). Now you'll need to connect to your iPod using a desktop FTP client that supports SFTP connections (using Winscp). This will allow you to browse and copy files to your iPod like you would if you could access the disk as an external hard drive on your computer.

To connect to your device from your computer, you'll need to know your iPod touch's or iPhone's IP address. You can find this by opening the Settings app, tapping Wi-Fi, and then tapping the blue arrow next to the network you're connected to.

    BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5213291660814144034

Now that you've got that, start up your FTP client of choice, enter the IP address as you server, and use root for your username and alpine as your password. Once connected, navigate to the Applications folder (just above the root folder). That's where your iPhone and iPod touch keep all of their applications. From here it's a simple matter of dragging and dropping the appropriate SIP-VoIP app to the applications folder.

I'm using the 1.1 version of SIP-VoIP, which you can download here. Once downloaded, unzip the file and then drag and drop the SIP-VoIP.app file to your Applications folder. Finally, restart your iPod or iPhone and the new app should show up on your home screen.

    Set Up an SIP Account

Unfortunately the SIP-VoIP app doesn't work with the most popular VoIP app Skype (it uses the SIP protocol), which means you'll have to set up an account with another service to use the app. Luckily there are tons of options out there that can work with SIP-VoIP. I used a service called FreeCall, so that's what I'll highlight in my examples, but the Touchmods blog lists a handful of alternatives.

If you want to follow along exactly with my settings, head to the FreeCall signup page and register for an account. After you register, you'll need to buy some minutes for your call time. FreeCall is an international service, so when it asks for your cell phone (to which it sends an SMS confirmation), you'll need to include your country code; for example, it would look something like 0015555551234 if you're in the US. The minimum purchase with FreeCall is 10 euros, which amounts to around $16. Once you've purchased some calling time with FreeCall, it's time to enter your setup configuration in SIP-VoIP and start making calls.

Set Up SIP-VoIP to Make Calls

Finally, we're ready to set up SIP-VoIP with the SIP provider you registered with above. Launch the app from your iPod touch or iPhone's home screen, then tap on Settings in the bottom right corner. You'll see a very rudimentary form where you'll enter the settings for the SIP account you set up above.

If you used FreeCall, enter your FreeCall username and password in the first two fields (other services will use the number they've assigned you as the username), then sip.voiparound.com in the field labeled SIP-Server. There are more fields, but for FreeCall that should be all you need. Hit Save to save your settings—you may have to hit return on the iPod's keyboard to dismiss it and see the Save button—and then tap the dial tab to head to the dialpad.

Before you make your first call, you have to connect the application to the SIP server, so click the button labeled "connect to sip server" in the lower left. If all goes well, it'll connect without a hitch. (This is where I ran into some problems with version 1.2 on the iPod touch. 1.2 connected without issue from my iPhone, but I kept getting connection error messages with 1.2 on my iPod touch. If you're having similar problems, installing version 1.1 may help.) If it connected successfully, all you've got to do is dial your number (country code included, depending on which service you go with) and hit the call button.

I actually stumbled onto a video on YouTube of a precocious kid using a Touchmods mic with SIP-VoIP and FreeCall. There are several of these videos on YouTube—I particularly like this speaker phone setup. Check out his video below to get a better look at what the final result is.

    Set up Inbound number
Your FreeCall account only handles outbound calls, but you're not out of luck if you want to add inbound functionality to your iPod touch. You can register your FreeCall SIP account with other services, like IPKall, to get a free phone number that will ring your iPod touch. (The only catch is that you're limited to a state of Washington area code). I won't go into details on setting up an inbound number, but you can find more details from this post at the Touchmods blog.

The SIP-VoIP app has been in development for a while, and though it's still not much to look at, it seems to be improving over time. The iPhone and iPod touch 2.0 firmware will officially hit the streets sometime in June with support for third party apps through Apple, so who knows what kind of VoIP apps we'll see when that time comes.

Whether or not we'll ever see Skype or another VoIP app officially supported for the iPhone (Apple says they'll allow VoIP over Wi-Fi), SIP-VoIP is already there. My experience with it has been hit-or-miss, and it's got miles to go before it's the friendliest app around, but whether you'd like to make international calls for cheap or you just want to want to reach out and touch someone from your iPod touch, the folks at Touchmods and SIP-VoIP are already providing the tools to do just that.

Come Back EDGE, *ALL* Is Forgiven!

from Just Another iPhone Blog by patrick
Copyright © 2008 patrick. Visit the original article at http://justanotheriphoneblog.com/wordpress/2008/06/07/come-back-edge-all-is-forgiven/.

OK, I’ll admit - I have never been a big supporter of Edge. I’ve blabbed away plenty over recent months about looking forward to a 3G iPhone - to how much faster, better, cooler that would be, with never a thought for any redeeming value in the current Edge data capability on the iPhone.

Well … for the last several days, EDGE data has left the building - so to speak - on my iPhone, and I’ve been missing it. Missing it *severely*.

I’ve been seeing the dreaded error shown in the above screencap: "Could not activate EDGE. You are not subscribed to EDGE." Once you see this error, there is no data connection in any of the iPHone’s applications if you are not connected to WiFi.

Just Data Probs, Voice is Fine …

For me, this issue has had no impact on phone / voice usage. I have been making and receiving calls, using visual voicemail, and generally having no phone troubles.

But … my iPhone as web device is just about dead in the water. Away from WiFi, no email, no web browsing, no Weather updates, no data connectivity.

    Get Some Help?

I’ve done all the most frequently recommended steps to resolution of this issue, per Apple Discussion and other help forums - i.e. I have used the Settings Applet to Reset both all network settings, and *all* settings on the phone. No change. I’ve restored the iPhone via iTunes, and set it up as a new partnership with iTunes (i.e. choosing not to allow it to restore back any previous settings that might carry some vestiges of the issue) - still no change. Did further restores of all settings after the full restore, and still no difference.

I have not yet called AT&T or Apple on this issue - as I have a bad, pessimistic feeling about it having read through lots of forum threads where folks have been passed back and forth between AT&T and Apple to no avail on this issue, or have been advised to do exactly the things I’ve already done.

    Blame Jailbreak???

As many of you know, my iPhone has been jailbroken for a lot of months now, and it’s always possible that is part of the reason for having this trouble now.

I don’t feel this is highly likely though - as I’ve seen plenty of people out there on forums seeing exactly the same sort of issue with completely stock phones. Also, of course, restoring the phone back to stock during troubleshooting has not made one bit of difference for me so far.

    Miss You, Edge …

Oh well, the main thing is … I have come to have a deep longing for, and newfound respect for, that lovely Edge data package that just won’t come out to play for me lately.

So yes - 3G is very cool, and I’m still very keen to see it - but no more running down and talking down Edge for me - just come back Edge, all is definitely forgiven …
