iPod Touch sales double year-on-year

Apple today reported its 2nd Quarter financial results with the news that it sold 11.01 million iPods during the quarter which is a 3 percent increase compared to the quarter a year ago. This is despite Apple’s introduction of the third-generation iPod shuffle during the quarter.

The good news is that the iPod touch showed particularly impressive performance, with sales more than doubling year-over-year. "The sum of iPhone plus iPod touch is now about 37 million units," said COO Tim Cook. "It provides an enormous platform for developers to develop on."

In a later question, Cook again referred to the iPod touch, calling it “a runaway hit” whose success is “clearly driven by the App Store.” To that end, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer indicated that one of the reasons the iPod touch has been so successful is as a games device. “All genres [on the App Store] are very popular,” said Oppenheimer, “but games are quite popular. That’s one of the reasons the iPod touch has been such a success.”

Cook also suggested the upcoming iPhone 3.0 SDK will further contribute to the platform's success. "With our recent SDK changes the developers are working on now, I think it just unleashes a whole new level of innovation that keeps Apple years ahead of everyone else," he said.

CFO Peter Oppenheimer, claims the iPod retains a 70-percent market share in the United States. Internationally, he suggests the media players have shown particularly impressive growth in the U.K., France, Germany, Japan, France and China.
