Apple warns of near-term iPod shortages

Apple has issued an advisement bulletin to select resellers suggesting that the company is beginning to ramp down production of current-generation iPod models, according to AppleInsider.

In the advisement, Apple “strongly suggested” that resellers either bring in or place immediate orders for approximately four weeks worth of their top selling iPod models, noting that supplies of the devices would start to become extremely limited within the next week.

Apple traditionally holds an iPod-focused special event in the September-October timeframe to announce new iPod models; this report is consistent with the belief that the company is planning to hold a similar event again this year.

Firmware Hints New iPod Touch?

Besides hints of turn-by-turn GPS directions, the beta 2.1 firmware also reportedly contains references to an unreleased iPod Touch known as "iPod2,1", according to iPhoneAtlas.

The current iPod Touch carries a model designation of "iPod1,1". iPhone readers may remember that the original iPhone is known as "iPhone1,1" while the iPhone 3G is known as "iPhone1,2". It should be noted that these model numbers don't appear to change for storage differences alone.

The original iPhone saw 4GB, 8GB and 16GB sizes but shared the same model number. Only when the iPhone 3G introduced new features, such as a GPS and 3G chipset, did the model number increment.

This would suggest the "iPod2,1" model will carry new features and not simply represent a storage increase to the current iPod Touch. Apple's iPod Touch is currently offered in 8GB, 16GB and 32GB sizes and has not been feature-upgraded since it's initial launch in September 2007. Apple did, however, add the 32GB model in February.

NetNewsWire for iPod touch and iPhone 3G

NetNewsWire for iPhone 3G and iPod Touch is a free native application based on the award winning RSS feed reader for Mac. NetNewsWire for iPod Touch (iPhone 3G) provides you with a lightweight, easy application for keeping up with feeds on the go and it syncs with NewsGator’s suite of RSS readers, including NetNewsWire for Macintosh, FeedDemon, Inbox, and NewsGator Online. RSS is the fastest and most efficient way to read your favorite news and with NetNewsWire for iPhone you can access feeds wherever you are.

The product features are:
-Access to RSS feeds from your iPhone 3G or iPod Touch.
-iPhone-native user interface.
-Synchronization with NewsGator’s suite of RSS readers, including NetNewsWire for Macintosh, FeedDemon, Inbox, and NewsGator Online.
-Centralized access to your feed list along with an indicator of how many unread news items are associated with each feed.
-Simple view of the titles of each unread news item for faster and easier skimming of content.
-User-friendly news item viewing pane that provides the item’s title, publisher, publish date, author and post.
-One-click access to view news items in Safari.
-"Next Unread" button, which goes from story to story with a quick tap of a single button.
-Clipping capabilities for saving items for later viewing or syncing with the desktop and browser-based RSS readers.

Once you’ve configured your feeds, launching NetNewsWire on the iPhone 3G displays a list of those feeds, along with the number of unread articles in each feed. (The current version of NetNewsWire for iPhone, 1.0.7, shows only feeds with unread articles; earlier versions showed all feeds. A setting to choose your preferred approach would be a nice addition.)

In the screenshot here, you can see that some feeds are grouped under headings; if you have feeds organized in folders on the Mac version of NetNewsWire, as I do, such groupings are synced to the iPhone version.

If you’re online—via either WiFi or a mobile network—the program will connect to the Internet to check for new articles and to sync the status (read/unread) of articles. You can see the total number of unread articles at the bottom-left of the screen, as well as on the app's icon on your iPhone's Home screen. This check/sync process happens each time you launch NetNewsWire, as long as the previous check/sync occurred more than five minutes before.

Tap on a feed to view a list of articles in that feed, sorted by date with newest articles at the top; unread articles are displayed with blue type, read articles with gray. Tap an article title to view the article summary and any information about the article provided by the feed. (One limitation here: if an article summary includes an image, NetNewsWire doesn't scale the image down to fit the screen; you must manually scroll around to see all of the image.)

You can quickly move to the next unread article summary by tapping the Next Unread button. Alternatively, if you want to view the full article, tap on its title on the summary screen. Unlike many other iPhone apps, NetNewsWire doesn’t use Safari to view a Web page; it provides its own Web-browser screen, so you don’t have to switch back and forth between NetNewsWire and Safari. However, while this screen lets you double-tap or “unpinch” to zoom in on a Web page, it doesn’t support rotation, so you can't view pages in landscape mode.

PS:He said that they are already working on the next release!!

Soon enough you will be able to download IPT 2.0 upgrade see here

Ipod Touch Upgrade from 1.1.4 to 2.0 Firmware

Everyone is looking for 2.0 firmware upgrade for Ipod Touch 1.1.4 .It will cost you $10 but don't worry by tonight or "tomorrow" Cali. time we all will be able to upgrade. As of right now (Jul 10th 4:25PM CST) there is no update for Ipod Touch only Iphoner's can upgrade to 2.0.

I think Apple is totally unfair to Ipod Touch users.

First they f***ed us with January upgrade where you get 5 icons for $30. Then they offer Ipod Touch Upgrade 2.0 for $10 with over 135 free apps!, and not to forget your January update will be deleted (as far as I heard).

But that's not all!! Iphone'rs get update Today but Ipod Touche'rs have to wait until tomorrow! WTF?

Yes, I can wait another day for this update, but from the business prospective Apple really knows how to pull nerves on people like me.

UPDATE: If you download iTunes 7.7 from Apple.com yes you will see all nice free apps but guess what ? They all say "You need Ipod Touch 2.0 Firmware" well where is it?

Google Talk (GTalk) on Ipod Touch

Google managed to change Gtalk (Google Talk) browser functionality for Iphone and Ipod Touch. Now when you use chat and go to different browser it will mark your status as "unavailable" or "busy" . I must say that Gtalk improvement looks better and it's easier to chat with somebody.

Ipod Touch Wifi Troubleshooting via Email

Since January of this year I have received 294 emails regarding Wifi problems that multiple ipod touch users had. From 294 emails I managed to fix 233 ipod touch devices and 19 was faulty and needed to be returned.

Other 42 Ipod Touch either did not get any responses back after I sent them an email or just couldn't get it to work.

Most problems occurred:
  • Wrong password Input (Admin password vs. Wep Key)
  • 64Bit Encrytion vs 128Bit encryption
  • Did not Release/Renew to obtain new IP
  • Did not restart modem/router to acknowledge Ipod Touch
Some other problems:
  • Email did not work
  • Sync with iTunes
  • Safari constantly crashing
  • Jailbreak was not installed correctly

iPod Touch Case: Factron Quattro Aluminum Case

The Factron Quattro Aluminum case is one of the most expensive iPod touch case that we have seen so far -- $222.67.

Factron Quattro Aluminum Case For iPod Touch 1
Factron Quattro Aluminum Case For iPod Touch 2
The Factron Quattro Aluminum case is made up of 2 separate sheets of high quality Aluminum metal. At the four corners, they are being binded together with screws. Your iPod Touch might be safe in this iPod touch case, but we can forsee that many will not feel comfortable with the design of this case(especially the four protruding corners) which totally contradict with the original sleek design of the iPod touch.

With a little higher price than $222.67, one can actually get a brand new iPod touch. This case is over pricey in our opinion.

iPod Touch Case: Contour Design Showcase Touch

The Showcase Touch from Contour Design is an iPod touch case with shock absorbing rubber combined with crystal clear plastic. This case is not completely a clear plastic case. It has a clear front and the back shells are accented with rubberized black plastic sides that latch together to form an almost entirely protective enclosure, which can be used with or without an included belt clip.

Contour Design Showcase touch
Here's the summary features of the Showcase Touch (taken from the official website):
"The Showcase touch brings dual layer protection and style to the iPod touch. The hinged design opens bookstyle, and contoured shock absorbing layers accent the iPod's touch's shape, giving it shock absorbing protection in its rubber layer and impact resistant crystal clear plastic. With a super low profile design, the Showcase touch offers both a belt clip and a way to seal the clip’s attachment point: a plug locks into the attachment mechanism, keeping dirt and dust out. The new slimline belt clip can be mounted in four positions, and a hinged dock port protector opens partially for access to only the headphone jack or fully for additional access to the dock port and hold switch. Complete protection continues with the click through hold botton protector."

The Showcase Touch score B+(recommended) from iLounge review:
"Showcase touch is worthy of our strong general recommendation, and we hope only that 2008 models find a way to enhance their protection even further."

And finally, read more about the customer review for the Showcase Touch.

Google Talk for iPhone and iPod touch

Google has just released in the US a new version of Google Talk designed specifically for the iPhone and iPod Touch browsers.

In addition to sending your friends Gmail messages from your iPhone, you can now chat with them while you're on the move, too! In your iPhone browser, just go to www.google.com/talk, sign in and start chatting. That's it.

Google Talk runs entirely in the browser so there's no need to download or install anything.

There are some differences from using Google Talk on your computer. For instance, in order to receive instant messages with Google Talk on your iPhone, the application needs to be open in your Safari browser. When you navigate away to another browser window or application, your status will be changed to "unavailable" and your Google Talk session will be restarted when you return.

Other than that, Google have tried to keep the design as faithful to the desktop experience as possible, so it should be familiar to you. You can select from a quicklist of the people you contact most, search your contacts, and manage multiple conversations. You'll never have to miss out on the latest gossip or updates from friends just because you're away from a computer.

Palm OS apps make their way to the iPhone

SplashID, SplashShopper and SplashMoney, collectively a series of popular Palm OS applications, are making their way to the iPhone’s AppStore.

SplashID

SplashID is a popular secure password manager that is currently available on a large number of handheld devices. Retail pricing for the application has been set at $30; if such pricing carries over to the iPhone, SplashID will be one of the most expensive titles yet-announced for the AppStore.

According to Splashdata’s blog: “SplashID for iPhone is about ready to launch, and we wanted to give you a sneak peek. It’s definitely the best looking version of SplashID we’ve ever created, and it works really smoothly and quickly. A bunch of you have asked why we have had to wait so long, and the answer is we’re waiting for Apple to launch its App Store so that we can make SplashID and other applications available. As many of you know, the only way to distribute official apps for the iPhone will be through Apple’s own App Store.”

A full feature list is available.

SplashShopper

SplashShopper is a list manager that is also available on a large number of handheld devices. It’s also listed at $30, though iPhone-specific pricing hasn’t been announced. You can find a complete feature list for the currently selling versions here.

SplashMoney

plashMoney

SplashMoney is a personal finance manager made popular on the Palm OS that offers two way syncing between the desktop and hand-held devices Online banking transactions can be downloaded to either desktop or hand held. It allows for budgeting and chart creation. You can schedule transactions, reminders, etc.

Like the other Splash Apps, SplashMoney is priced at $30.

UPDATE: We’ve received a note from SplashData regarding pricing for SplashMoney:

“It’s not official yet, but we are leaning toward charging $9.95 for the
handheld client (which will be sold through the App Store)”
